A lacquer surface is 5–7 layers of paint + sanding + polish — hard, but not diamond. It scratches under the right (wrong) conditions; under careless use, it scratches faster. We're answering with the workshop's 5 years of service records.
When does it scratch?
- Hard metal: a key or fork tip rubbed against the surface = a visible scratch.
- Abrasive sponge: steel wool, scour pads = stained traces on matte lacquer, splits on glossy.
- Chlorine-based chemicals: bleach dulls the surface, leaving 'scratch-like' marks.
- Years of fingernail wear: if the door corner is opened from the same point repeatedly, that point fatigues.
5 years of field data
In typical family kitchens, we see 2–3 minor marks on lacquer over 5 years; in commercial use (cafe, restaurant) the number runs 10–15. Matte lacquer hides scratches better than glossy; glossy reveals them more clearly.
Among customers with kids, matte lacquer is chosen 7 out of 10 times. Reason: it hides fingerprints and small scratches.
How are scratches repaired?
Surface marks (in the polish only): automotive polish (T-Cut equivalent) + microfiber, circular motion. 5 minutes, 90% improvement.
Deep scratches (reaching the paint coat): need workshop repair. Color match, local repaint, polish — fixed in 1 day, no need to remove the door. We pick up and return within Istanbul.
Prevention — 4 practical rules
- Wipe the surface weekly with microfiber + warm water. Never use a sponge.
- For greasy stains, pure ethanol or isopropyl alcohol is appropriate.
- Replace the habit of opening from the door corner with using the handle (or push-to-open from the center if installed).
- On child-height doors, an optional protective film (gold/brass tinted) is available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a single lacquer door be replaced?
Yes. We produce a new one without removing the old door from the frame; for color match we take a RAL code or sample. Single-door order minimum is 1,500 TL.
Does automotive polish damage lacquer?
Light polishes (e.g. Meguiar's M205) are safe. Heavy cutting polishes (M105) go through the polish into the paint — in non-expert hands, they can cause dulling. If unsure, send the door to the workshop.
How does a small scratch look on matte vs glossy lacquer?
On matte lacquer, the scratch reads as a 'glossy mark'; on glossy, as a 'matte mark'. Both can be 80% removed with polishing.
Does lacquer fade under UV?
We use UV-resistant paints in standard catalog colors. 5 years of direct sunlight: no reported fading. With very custom colors + continuous sun exposure, minimal tone shift may occur over years.
